The Effects of International Volunteering on Community-based Engagement in Canada
La relation entre le volontariat à l'étranger et le volontariat communautaire
About the Study

The purpose of this project is to examine the correlation (if any) between international volunteering and local community-based volunteering in Canada when volunteers return from abroad. The study provides important insight into the contributions of international volunteering beyond the work conducted in host communities abroad.

The study examines whether Canadians who have volunteered abroad are more actively engaged in local community-based volunteering and giving compared to the national provided in the General Social Survey - Giving, Volunteer and Participating - GSS-GVP.

General Project Objectives
There is insufficient Canadian-specific data concerning returned volunteers and therefore know few details about the individuals who volunteer abroad. The impacts of international volunteers remains largely under-studied in the Canadian context. The purpose of the study is to fill this gap.

The research will also provide a more comprehensive database of findings of the impact of returned international volunteers in the Canadian context.

Specific Project Objectives:
1. To collect data from Volunteer Sending Organizations for a report on the long-term impacts of international volunteering in the context of volunteering at "home" in Canada.
2. To highlight important contributions international volunteers make to their local communities upon their return to Canada as well as significant transformations in life paths and global citizenship identities.
